Getting a Library Card

A library card is free to Butler County residents with proper identification. Your card is permanent and must be renewed each year. It entitles you to borrow materials from any of the 10 libraries within the Butler County Federated Library System.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

  • A parent or legal guardian’s signature is required for anyone under 18 years of age.

  • Proper identification is a driver’s license with current address OR two other forms of identification with current address, such as a recent utility bill, Pennsylvania identification card, or a bank statement.

  • Lost or destroyed cards may be replaced at a cost of $2.50.

Using Your Library Card

You must present your card to check out materials. You may have any combination of 25 items checked out at one time, including:

  • Books, books on CD, and music CDs - 3 weeks 

  • DVDs - 3 weeks 

  • DVD Series are 3 weeks

  • Magazines are free to read as you please, but you cannot check them out (If magazines are by the windows with a sign stating to take, then you can take them and do not have to return them)

  • Puzzles are free to use and keep

 

Fines

Patrons will be charged the current retail cost for lost materials. The fee for lost item(s) must be owed to the owning library​. Borrower privileges will be suspended when fines are $5.00 or more. Fines may be paid at any BCFLS library. The receiving library retains all fine money.

Late Fees:

All materials except videos and ILL's: $.25 per day

DVDs - $1.00 per day

Readers and other devices - At the Discretion of the Library Director

Maximum Fine - Retail cost or best estimate to replace.

​***When a patron has been sent to the magistrate or police, fines may not be accepted in any amount. The patron must deal directly with the police or magistrate. Forgiveness of fines is at the discretion of the library directors with the exception of fines related to police or magistrate cases.
